So as you can read just a few topics down I took over as the Varsity DC after years as a youth HC.

Its been a roller coaster.  I love roller coasters.

We play in a smaller division so as the mass of HS teams are starting playoffs, we just won our Michigan State Championship.

This team had not won a single game in 2 years. We squeaked into playoffs and I think that lit a fire in a few behinds.  We also had injuries plague us early so I was forced to play kids on D that had no business on D at all.

This coming Saturday we are headed down to Indianapolis to play the Indiana State Champs.  We played them in a non conference matchup earlier in the season and they handed us our ass on a big silver platter. Boys played lethargic, missed tackles, didnt seem to care, massive heat wave and dehydration issues.  It was ugly.  I'm hoping that is the team they expect to play because we are not that team any longer.

I really cant thank the members on this board enough. I came here not many years ago at all as a first time dad coach just trying to learn as quick as possible not to be a complete failure and help grow some kids for the next level.

JJ, Dave Potter, Mahonz, Michael, Clark and quite a few others have all been huge influences and helped immensely either directly or indirectly and I cant thank you enough.  It may seem silly but there are a whole lot of kids up here in Michigan who know your names as I give credit where it is due.

Congratulations on your success (your team's and your own development as a coach).  As I've said many times, one of the great things about coaching is that you can be as good as you want to be.  There is no opponent to stop you from learning.  As you've benefitted from learning, so have your kids.  That's a win-win.  Good luck in Indy.

Years to come?  I like the sound of that.  🙂

Ive expressed my interest loudly in staying with the program for as long as they will allow me. My entire starting D only had 1 senior. Both CBs and my reaper are all 10th graders. 2 DTs are 14 year old monsters with the smallest at 6'2" 220lbs and they hold their own well against similarly sized older players.

This season has been fun but the capabilities that we have for the future are ridiculous if we keep them engaged and learning.

Congratulations on the great year and no matter who gave you advice or helped along the way ... all success was earned through the hard work of you and your kids ... I hope you did well over the weekend !!!

Congrats, Coach!

Where in MI? That is my home state. From metro Detroit - alma mater is a mediocre Div 1 program that recently seems to perennially draw the honor of getting throttled by Cass in the 1st round of the playoffs.  :-[

Bc of that I am a little more familiar with the bigger school format though I have always enjoyed watching some of the smaller division programs (Ithaca, Menominee, etc.) particularly as I find a lot of what they do to be very youth friendly.

Anyhow, my understanding has always been that everyone had to go through State Playoffs to be crowned State Champs and wasn't aware there were 11 man teams in MI that wouldn't qualify for Div 8 Playoffs. Heck, even 8 man ball has two divisions in MI.

Just curious...

Grand Rapids area.

Grand Valley Christian Patriots.

Closest team to Detroit that we played was the Downriver Wolfpack. We are in the Great Lakes Christian Athletic Conference.
