Some advice needed please.

My team has traditionally not participated in 7 on 7 and seeing I've only been at this level a few years I'm not familiar with them either.

A sponsor offered to pay for us to go to MSUs 7 on 7.

How many kids do you usually bring to them?

How long before do you usually practice?

Is it typically upperclassmen or do you start your younger guys in it as well?

If we find value in it we will keep doing them in the future but we were always a power run team when I was the DC. Now that I'm on the other side of the ball as HC/OC I'm fully intending on airing it out. Pass D in my conference is trash and we have a wealth of receivers this year.

7on7 is invaluable for any team.

1st it teaches your players to compete, regardless how much you plan to throw the ball.

Next, it gives your team a chance to play defense & learn to cover the pass.

We like to take between 18-22 players. It's a long hot day & you will need to sub guys out.

Usually 4 one hour sessions should get you ready to go.

We try to blend upper class men with younger players as well.

Good luck! If you have more questions just give me a call.

Agree.  But like anything else, you'll only get out of it what you put into it.  So if it turns out to be a waste of time for you, it's because you didn't prepare for it properly.

Thats exactly why I'm asking DP.  Its a new realm for me and my players.  My only 7 on 7 experience is the director for our 1st/2nd grade flag football and that is almost solely admin.

My normal fall season roster is 25. with only 7 players who solely play on the line. So it sounds like everyone else should make the trip.

Any tips Defensively?  Are the standard offenses usually just pass happy versions of what we see in the fall?

I hate not knowing what to expect because it makes preparation that much harder again this will be a brand new experience so I'm reaching out to my legion of mentors here.

We base our defense from 2 man

Cover 2 man underneath

This has been pretty consistant

I would definitely get ahold of Joe. He has far more than I could give.

2 Things my offense will always have is a Wing and a Wedge

Teams that are 7on7 specialist usually will be in empty on offense & play 2 man on defense. That is the most common thing you will see.

We OTOH will run our normal concepts on offense, of course having a sprinkling of empty. On D we will play Palm, C4, C6 to Trips & some 2 man. Again our normal things. Our thoughts being to prepare our team for the season not 7on7. We have done well at 7on7 tournaments in the past, but more importantly we have prepared our team for the season.

Obviously, things like Fast Screens & Playaction usually have no place at 7on7. That being said we will usually run our Naked boot anyway.

This is the best approach imo. No sense doing 7 on 7 unless you run what you run.

We will be running our new fall playbook. It will be my first opportunity to introduce it after moving over to the Offensive side of the ball.  They know how aggressive I've been on D so they expect a drastic change but my team isnt a traditional HS team. My kids go to 5 different schools plus half are homeschooled. Some drive 45 minutes to get to practice. Getting them all together during the off-season is traditionally hard, especially for those who cant drive themselves yet, I had 3 14 year old and 3 15 year old starters last season.
