So it looks like I'm headed to a Single Wing clinic. It's next month somewhere up in Pennsylvania. (I'm not driving so it doesn't matter.). But I am riding with a coach from the forum. Other than Dave Cisar's, I've never been to a Single Wing clinic. It'll be like meeting a relative for the first time. And hopefully, I'll learn some new tricks.

Hell Yeah!! Coach Potter is coming over to the dark side!! At least for a weekend anyway!

I'm just taking a look. However, I could be seduced. I mean, convinced.

I know that Rick Darlington will be speaking at the Charlotte Glazier the previous week, so I'll be in attendance there, too.

Coach Darlington is fantastic! Always a good thing to listen to somebody speak about something they are passionate about! Definitely gonna be taking notes when he speaks at the Conclave. Heck, if Charlotte wasn't 6 hours away, I'd go to Glazier down there just to sit in on his Clinic.

They will not serve great chili and a vast assortment of craft beers at the Glazier! The Conclave has Darlington, great chili and all the beer you can drink. You are gonna have fun, Dave!
I'll be the silent dude in the corner taking hundreds of pages worth of notes!

I am making the trek by myself this year so I might set close to the corner to distract you.
I won't be hard to spot. Probably easily the dumbest person in the room, at least I hope so!

Be sure and wear that helmet !

I hope I win one this year. My friend, Carl Wanek, who runs a youth league in Ocean Side, NJ won that in a raffle at the Conclave two years ago. He just let me get a selfie in it.
Coach, you're going to love it at the Conclave. Have a blast!
I returned from a 16-hour roundtrip drive to/from the Single Wing Conclave in Pennsylvania. I have to say that other than being able to see some friends of mine there (Dave Cottrill, Leonard Johnson, Nathan Keen, Ryan Patrick, Clint Rogers and Cody Singleton [who I rode with]), the clinic was pretty much a waste of time. I was looking forward to some of the topics on Wedge and the Notre Dame Box, but instead what I got was 90-minute announcements that focused on the presenter's background, how many games he's won, war stories of his season, how many IEP kids were on his team, how small his players were, how dumb they were, how undermanned he was yet still was able to overcome...
The actual topics were rarely discussed and seemed to serve as a title only. It was like buying a copy of "Sports Illustrated" only to open the magazine and find it's really "Better Homes and Garden." If you title your presentation about Wedge, or Box or a particular scheme, then that should be the bulk of the presentation. NOT how many games you've won, or stories about particular games or kids who played for you. Don't insult your own players by complaining about how many IEP kids you have, how small your team is, or what challenges during the season you had to overcome. None of that is relevant or helpful to me, and all of it is self-congratulatory back-slapping.
Show me a diagram of what you're going to discuss, show me some video, and then break it down for me (who/what/how/when/where/why). Give me the cheat notes and bullet points for the install. Let me see how you teach this and stop talking about yourself. I came for a clinic, not a bunch of bar-talk.
Don't use teaching terms that you don't understand (popcorn block), and don't say that 10-year-olds can't learn rule-blocking or that flipper blocking is a waste of time.
Other than that, it was great. ?

Definitely didn't get much I could use at my level. I was intrigued by the Box Series, but all I got from the presentation was that: "We run it well", "Here's the typical backfield action", and "Our coaches are on the juice".
Nothing about blocking schemes or what situations you find it to be most effective in.
Also, PLEASE don't title your presentation Notre Dame Box! That was not even close to the same thing as the ND box. Call it Triple Spin Box or something. I really would have liked to have some sort of power point on the Series, it was very deceptive, but from the presentation there is just no way I could run it.
