Not really football related . . . well, maybe since a lot of us are required to take USA Football certification.
My son left for work this morning (works for Mahonz) at 7:36. He called me a few minutes later from his car to tell me that he just watched a woman punch her kid in the head. We deduced that she was walking him to the elementary school that is just around the corner.
I pulled up my Ring video and saw it. The kid looked to be a kindergartner or maybe 1st grade. He clearly didn't want to go to school and actually ran away from her. She dragged him by the arm for about 40 yards. You can hear hear yelling at him on the audio and at one point said "STOP HITTING ME!" then punched him twice in quick succession. Once in the stomach and once in the back of the head. My son was standing outside his car and got a better view than what you can see on my camera, but he said it was with a closed fist.
I called the local elementary school and told them what happened. Whomever answered the phone initially played the "off school grounds" card. I firmly reminded her that as an educator, she is a mandatory reporter under Colorado law. Further, the mandatory reporter requirement does not start and stop during school hours or on or off school grounds. She put me on hold to talk to someone else and eventually invited me to come to the school to share what info I had. Principal was out today, but I spoke to their "Social Emotional Learning Specialist". She is a former caseworker for Child Protective Services. She had me give my information along with my son's and had me email the video and stills. They don't know the identity of the child or the mother, but will work with CPS to find out. I'll call CPS myself if I don't hear anything by tomorrow.
Nothing else to say or comment on, but this forum is kind of my confessional and group therapy. I was physically abused as a kid, but we didn't call it that in the 70's and most didn't consider corporal punishment as abuse. To be clear, what I experienced went beyond spanking and open handed slaps. As an adult, I am pretty firm in my belief that adults have no reason to use corporal punishment given that they have every advantage over a child (financial, intelligence, experience, size and strength). My son (24 years old) is pissed.
Thanks for listening/reading.
Game plan? I got your game plan. We gonna run the bawl some. We gonna throw the bawl some. We gonna play some defense. We gonna run some special teams, but we better not run kick return but one time and we sure as heck better not punt.
