So today we played against the 10u team from the org where I spent 12 years as a header and 4 years as an AC; where we won 12 championships and played for a national championship.  Strange to line up against them, when I'd coached against and won 2 championships against the team I was now coaching for.  2 of the coaches on their staff, I've known for at least a decade.

We took the opening possession down the field, nickel and diming them along the way.  We popped a few wide open plays but when I say that we are slow (we time our guys in the sprint using a sun dial), our longest gain was 11 yards.  They eventually stopped us but we'd taken 8 minutes off the clock.  Our opponent got the ball and we stopped them.  On our second possession, I put in our MPR offense and we continued to nickel and dime until we punched it in on Power, going up 6-0.  Our opponent came right back and scored, tying the game on a pass play.  Our CB stayed with their receiver, but their guy was just taller and made a nice grab in the end zone.  At the half, the game was tied at 6, with us just having 2 possessions.

In the 2nd Half, we stopped their opening possession and took over.  We continued to nickel and dime, but due to a penalty had a 4th and 20 at our own 35.  The header discussed punting, but I thought it was 3rd Down and balked at the idea.  I called a Counter (our first one of the season), it broke big and we gained 20+ and a 1st Down.  lol We continued to eat clock on the drive and scored our second TD in the 4th Quarter with about 4 minutes remaining.  Our opponent took over and drove the ball down to our 5-yard-line.  On 4th & 2 at our 5, we stopped them in the backfield.  We took a knee and ended the game.  Not counting the 1-play-take-a-knee, we had THREE possessions in the game.  (We play 10-minute quarters.)  I've never, ever coached a game where we had only 3 possessions.  On the bright side, we scored on 66.6% of our possessions.  This puts us at 2-1 on the season.  Dodged another bullet.

Wow, 3 possessions in 10 min quarters is nuts.  We had 4 with 8 min quarters last week, and that felt fast.  Granted, we’d have had 1 more possession if I’d been watching the clock better and used my time outs in the first half on D.  But I’ll take the W.

Yesterday, we added a new AC.  (Parent). I was able to work with our Punter and Longsnapper for the first time.  It felt amazing.   Then I was able to work a Beast concept with a ball-carrier, two blockers and a defender.  It was wondrous.  The two-coaches-for-twenty six-10-year-olds was frustrating.  Now I'm hoping to actually be able to dot an "I" or maybe even perhaps cross a "T."  I've never coached youth football with just one other guy and I'll never do it again.
