Greetings Coaches,

Anyone run the mid-line?   If so, what did you run as complementary (non-option) plays?

I'm thinking of ordering Roger Holmes material on the md-line, but with the experience of the coaches on this list, figured odds were good that someone had some experience with it.

Umm.... why does that 6 ft tall 9 yr old have a goatee...?

Short answer is double dive

Our midline series was

Mid line

Midline follow

Double dive

Counter keep (counter option with no option).

I can explain it to you, I can't understand if for you.

Kinda/sorta.

Based on some good feedback from Mahonz and a few others on this forum, I eliminated "dive" as part of the option. "Dive" was a called play, so we basically ran "double option" (keep/pitch) out of the I.

Then, through a series of mis-adventures and compromises, we sent our FB away from the option side so our QB would open away, fake the dive and reverse pivot. TB took a jab step to help with the timing. We would always set up our option by running a dive or two (to the away side), then hit them with the option.

Eliminating the dive read, I feel it was the right move. Too many decisions in too little time otherwise.

Blocking was "Playside Gap, On, Backer" and we always identified the EMLOS and didn't block him. So TE went 2nd level.

Game plan? I got your game plan. We gonna run the bawl some. We gonna throw the bawl some. We gonna play some defense. We gonna run some special teams, but we better not run kick return but one time and we sure as heck better not punt.

Thanks Coaches,

When we have a big lead we let the OL kids gets some carries, turns out, one of them runs like a ticked-off baby Rhino, he's a straight line kid with about a 10-12 yd burst,  flattened everyone in front of him including his teammates and one unfortunate ref.   We have no weight limit on ball handlers, but our out-of-league competition does.  So, he's really not a candidate for full-time duty at TB (wing T FB), but we do want to use him in short yardage packages.  A couple of complementary plays could break big.   So, we're talking about him in the mid-line to take advantage of his burst and size (incoming 4th grader ~120 lbs, he was the only kid we had over 112 lbs).

We're probably going Red/Blue formation as our base this season, in the mid-line series we'd use the returning HB & WB in Sweeps and Jets, and maybe an off-tackle play for the QB depending on who ends up there.

We try to leave no stone unturned and in the off-season look into various ways to improve our team, but keep falling back on our old standards, the Buckshort, Belly weak, Belly strong and Bucksweep w/ the WB running to the open side.  Likely we'll do the same this year, but we're always looking for ways to improve.
