No huddle / Hurry Up as a complement

Hey all,

I'm considering working in a little no huddle / hurry up (I know that no-huddle isn't necessary fast) this fall for my 12U team as a change up, but not base, and I'm looking for a simple way to to call plays in from the sideline for this.  For my normal play calling, I have a QB wristband with all plays (including tags) numbered, and I just call out a number to him and he calls the play in the huddle.

For hurry up, I've considered just limiting it to a series (3-4 related plays) and then just calling out a number / color / keyword.  Or even just having them practice a 3-4 play series that we run in a particular order, and I'd kick that off by just yelling out 'rabbit' or 'cheetah'.  Either of these options would be simple enough, but I'm looking for ideas of ways you all have done it before.

Thanks!

As a change up?

Is what you normally do that boring or unsuccessful?

Anywho, just call your play verbally. I've literally yelled "zone right" at 12u and got a first downs, multiple times.  Most kids on the other team are smart enough to pick up on anything.

If you want Mysterious, cool, gadget methods. Use hand signals , or extravagant poster boards with pictures and words on them .

I can explain it to you, I can't understand if for you.

We signaled in our plays for no-huddle.  Tap my head=Power; Tap my shoulder=Counter; Rub my stomach=Wedge; etc.  Every play defaulted to the right unless I waved my left arm, or made a slash motion, or...etc.  Not hard to teach, not hard to learn.  Biggest issue was making sure that every player had eyes on me when I was signaling.  What we didn't signal in was formation or adjustment tags.

Im interested in it more for situational purposes.  2 minute drill, trying to keep subs in or out on the other team, etc.

thanks, Dave.  I think I like this.  We run power most of the time anyway, so something like this could easily work.

Just give all your players the wristband and eliminate the middleman as well as the huddle.

That’s also a simple solution.  I’d need to purchase the wristbands, and I’d need to produce the cards.  I’ve always been hesitant because I tend to change the cards from week to week during the season as we install/tweak things, so it would be a lot of work to do so many more than I was already.

Our team uses a simple system to run six plays using hand signals.
We begin by calling formation (wing or pistol—- simple to mock with with your hand!)

next we call playside - right is pointing up, left is point to the turf.
next is play

dive, keeper, crossbuck, pop pass, toss sweep, reverse

all very simple gestures… for example cross your arms for crossbuck, balloon exploding for Pop pass, , broom motion for sweep, hand back and forth for reverse.

12 plays right there… can teach it in a day… have another coach give fake signals just in case you have an opposing coach like me who will read your signals in scout film.  - Magee

It's only a lot of work if you are shuffling the call sheet from week to week or using a lot of tags.  If you only refer to the wristband during "hurry-up," then it's most likely that your hurry-ups aren't changing from week to week.  Wristbands for hurry-up can work, but they're problematic if you use as many formations and tags as we do, or shuffle your playbook.

Couldn't you trim your playbook for the hurry-up?  Your captains would have the full issue for when you huddled.

yeah.  That’s also true.  I’d only want a small subset and likely minimal tags.  Otherwise I’d just huddle

@festivus15

Our hurry up we have 4 plays.  2 pass concepts, and 2 run concepts.

Our run play calls are college town/teams (Florida/gator).

Pass plays are Pro team (philly/eagle)

Our hurry cue is "mayday". And we hand signal and yell the play in using our play call system.

Our runs are OZ and truck.

Our pass plays are slant/seam combo and all hooks with a long.

I can explain it to you, I can't understand if for you.
