8-2-1 KO Return
What is the key on going straight ahead like that and going to get your man? I've seen other teams do it that way but the kick off guys seem to just run right by them.
Honestly, I think it is just that they know who their man is prior to kick and by running straight at them (not running backwards a couple steps first, which almost certainly equals multiple players turning their backs on the kicking team) and not taking their eyes off their targets.
In this case, if a would be tackler runs right past, it is likely because the blocker is scared.
We use it and love it (8-2-1), did not lose an Onside kick last season, we also move the front line back, about a yard, so they won't try and pick the ball up before it goes 10 yards...blocking needs to get better when the bad guys kick it away, but that is hard to work on in practice, as we only have 17 kids, and the ones not on the kick return are generally offensive lineman, so they don't move that well...
We only avg around 17 kids so I run into that issue also. Every once in awhile I steal some of the 5th/6th grade backups and throw them on kickoff. Helps some but don't get access to them enough to make a huge difference.

Funny thing... there were a couple games where the refs tried to move my front line up to the line and I had to explain that they are exactly where I want them, please leave them alone.
Yeah I have had refs move them up on me also, not sure why they do that.
Me too. I thought we were just in a stooopid program, couldn't imagine the officials would do that elsewhere! Actually I thought that elsewhere the coaches wouldn't have their front line players crowding the line, but I learned here that that's not true either. I tell them (thinking maybe some of them know baseball & softball better) that's like playing with your infield in, they just say, this is not baseball! (OK, then it's like playing the net in tennis.)
BTW, that's one of the things I most appreciate about being able to use forums like this: finding out that the things I'm seeing aren't peculiar to wherever I am, but go on all over the place. I keep thinking that everywhere else, where in my imagination the game is taken more seriously,... 😀 The Field Turf is greener there, too.
