With 8-9 yo, would you just onside kick everytime? Seems to me it just makes more sense being that I have only 4 kids with any experience and there will obviously be some concern about their open field tackling skills at that age even though we work on angle form fit tackling drills every day.
So with the overwhelming consensus being always on-side kick.
What is everyones preferred kick formation?
ball
R L
D
G G G C C G G G
We have a three kicker formation and they are all bunched. R is at a 45 degree angle facing the football and onside K's right....L is at a 45 degree angle facing the football and onside K's left....D kicks deep. G's are gunners and C's are contain.
Coach signals L or R or D to the bunch. D is holding his hand up. When D drops his hand every goes to include all three kickers at the ball. The two not kicking suddenly stop and turn into C's.
Last season with second graders we recovered 66%. First game this year with 3rd graders 2/5. Should have been 4/5. One of our G's will be getting replaced tonight.
The KOR team can never anticipate so they can never overload any part of their formation.
Edit...I adjusted my percentage...we were 16/24 last season on side kicking.
What is beautiful, lives forever.
We go with our 6 fastest kids to the bench side of the kicker, 4 on the other side. We have the kicker try to kick the ball on the ground out of bounds to our bench at their 45-47 yard line, so he's aiming 12-15 yards downfield. We have the end man on the line sprint down the sideline with the intent to meet the ball there. He doesn't cut in for the ball, he lets the ball come to him. The other 5 go to the ball. I have two on the backside come straight across as safeties, and the other two take paths that hem the ball in.
We probably recovered 5-6 kicks in our 7 games last year. I don't remember the exact number. One return, the ball bounced up into the arms of one of their up men on the run and he popped right through our front line. Safeties both caught him.
We only kick deep when up 3+ scores.
