Did Cox every make a drill manual?  I believe I have seen it referenced but that doesn't always mean it was created.

Pros and cons for this in a run heavy league. 9 yr olds.

Odd stack was meant to defend the spread style of offense.

If you mean "run heavy" from spread then yea...sure

If you mean "run heavy" as in 23 personnel...then ide say no

I've not run the 3-5-3, but I can understand running it at a (run heavy) youth level if you expect your LBs & DBs to be playmakers and you see mostly sweeps from the run.  In the majority of youth games I see, 1st Down is a sweep to one side, 2nd Down is a sweep to the other.  If both plays were shot down, that makes it 3rd and long and there's no way they're running it up the middle (or off-tackle) on 3rd and long.  So they try another Sweep or Reverse (Double Sweep).  On 4th Down, they're relegated to punting (which they don't do) or passing, which for many teams looks like an act of desperation.  So a 3-5-3 concept could work at a run-heavy youth level. If the 3-man front covers the nose and B-Gaps, then ISO-heavy power running teams could be defended.  If the team is then successful enough to then get to regionals, where they are more likely to see successful passing teams, the 3-5-3 could be the order of the day.  I would guess that a successful 3-5-3 team would not use the D-Line as a place to hide MPRs.

I disagree... sort of.

If you see a lot of sweeps or even option, it can work well to contain that because you get 3 to 4 guys on or outside the T.  The post-snap movement and stunts/blitzes are also good to keep the defense gap sound while confusing youth OL who might not have learned solid blocking rules yet.

It can be weak off tackle, though, especially if your FS isn't getting downhill in run support, but in some leagues the youth teams don't run off tackle much or block it well, especially at the lower levels.

If you're always seeing packed boxes with 32 personnel, it makes more sense to me to take the odd stack rules, but play it with 5-3 personnel (which is what the odd stack evolved from, anyway).  It's not hard: the odd stack rules and structure will still apply, but you'll need stouter kids at the "Spur" spots.

My preference vs. 32 personnel is to get into a 5-4 double eagle, preferably with invert Cov. 2 and the S up as overhangs, though.

Some good information in here.  I decided to install a 353 this season as I've handed over my duties as OC for the first time since i started coaching, so I could focus on the Defense. We have great overall team speed, and kids who love to fly to the ball.  And we are short on stout DL.  So it made perfect sense.

I'm signaling play calls in to the Mike who will repeat them to the LBs and DL.  For now it's just slants, taps, and different blitz combinations among the 5 LBs.  The spur/dogs/Hybrids for me are playing edge/contain and pass.  They are not pass rushers.  We are playing Cover 3 behind it.  Later in the season we'll install a Cover 4 for Prevent, and a Bear package where we drop in to a 5-4 for Goal Line scenarios.

We haven't been in any game scenarios yet.  But we did scrimmage the 5th grade on Thursday, and didn't allow any TDs and very few positive yards.  (We are 4th grade)  I have two round robins set up for this weekend, so we'll know alot more then.
