I was looking at some pistol playbooks and youtube footage and noticed that sometimes the quarterback reverse pivots on the handoff and sometimes he opens and hands off the ball.  What determines this are there certain plays or is it preference?  I saw Nevada and SF do it both ways as well.

Without seeing the plays, was there misdirection or a counter involved?  That could be the reason.

NW

It depends strictly on the play, the blocking, & is it a read or not a read. Stretch/Power is a read & the QB will directly open to read the EMOL. IZ can't be a read from Pistol(by our terminology) so it is a reverse pivot with Boot action. There are so many factors that go into the QB's steps, you need to identify the play & the blocking to be clear.

Open-pivot on ZONES & reverse-pivot on GAP scheme.

A lot has to do with the play you're running, formation, system, etc. We have gotten away from a lot of stuff and just open and ride. This helped a lot, but we don't have our backs directly behind the QB like I did at the youth level.

Folks:
I have studied and followed the Pistol for about 5 years now.  You would be hard pressed to tell me that it doesn't work at the Youth Level!

At the same time it takes hundreds of Reps to make everything Click

Sound Familiar? This isnt the Magic Offense.

Lets Ponder Coach Ault and Coach Leach for a Minute, Hour, or Month.

Their material isn't about great QB Play, Its not about great RB's or WR's.  Granted Mike Leach does make good receivers. However, their offense is all about a combination of decent QB, RB and Receiver play,  They bet the farm that their "average" RB and QB, along with good receivers can make your defense look "average".  Transcend that to HS or Youth ball and the Philosophy still fits!

Its up to us Coaches to make it happen.
