And so it begins…

Tonight we begin our pre-draft combine.  Over the next 3 nights we will (optimally) see each kid twice, but at least once.  Any kid not seen by all coaching staffs will drawn out of the hat at the end of the draft.   Saturday is our draft.

The Poachers revived after seemingly having imploded among themselves, managed to reorganize and to cherry pick a lot of the best talent with promises galore.  We were looking at a low number of kids coming up from the lower level (7U) anyway, and now, looking at the present numbers, we’ve had to contract to 4 teams, but have worked out a tentative arrangement with a league in the next county over to fill out our schedule.

The kids are divided up into 4 groups, each coaching staff gets to run which ever (non-contact) drills and such they want.  Our staff is running drills specifically to find OGs and FBs.

Last season was abysmal for us, we've spent the off-season questioning and challenging everything to see what we could have done better, and what we will do better this season.   For me, losing makes for a very long off-season...

Finally, the season is here.

It the time of year when hope springs eternal. Self reflection is good, but I’d stick with the things that have been successful and remember not to throw the baby out with the bath water.

Our plan - everything we do as coaches, do it better.

Little advice on try out drills

Bear crawl 20 m: note the fastest and the kids who didn't fall. Fast with a fall is a -2.  This will show coordination and physical maturity.  Dc posted something like this a while ago and it's accurate.  If I only have 10 minutes with 50 kids let's say.  I'm notating who can accomplish this drill the fastest.

Then line them all up for a flat out 20m race.  Run 3x notate who the top 5 are after each. Grab the kid that's in the top 5 the most.

I love when I see coaches doing actual football drills in try outs.  That's not what it's for haha

Good luck in your draft

I can explain it to you, I can't understand if for you.

We had our combine, had our draft, tomorrow night we begin practice.   With our 3 returners, we have 15 kids on the roster. (One I will be surprised if he sticks it out – we got the last man standing, again)

6 of our kids [Mid-to-late rd picks] are ave-sized, mid-level athletically, whom we drafted mostly for their attitude and how quickly they picked things up.   Over-all, the depth of our mid-level kids in this draft was very good.  So… we ended up with 3 pretty good looking kids; a bunch of OK kids whom we’ll have to figure out where to play; and 3 late rd kids we’re going to have find a spot for…

Time to Coach ‘Em UP!
