After a few pm's about learning "eco" for youth, I decided to share my findings in the system from this season. And how to be effective with very little. The biggest lessons are:
You play 8 man boxes 99% of the time.
--- need to be able to complete passes for yards.
--- must formation an advantage.
Simple right? Well I kept saying we can run on the fronts with 7 blockers and the 8th man was the backside guy we don't block. Haha no, least not with an avg running back.
The overhaul... with soft single high coverage (9/10 teams played)
-We ran 2 pass concepts in drop back. Smash and seam.
- had 2 formation tags - " loose" and "trey"
-- we would start in "doubles " or "trips"
Loose - H is 5-6 yards away from tackle (split difference of emLos and wr)
---x---------------0-0-#-0-0--y
-----------H----------------------------------z
Trey: differed from trips by alignment of the H in relation to Y and Z.
---x----------0-0-#-0-0--y
---------------------------------H----------z
That's it...
I can explain it to you, I can't understand if for you.
I have always loved the simplicity of the ECO. My issue with it as a youth coach is the pounding that the rb would receive since youth teams run so much. Well, that and I don't know how to coach zone yet. I am working on it as we teach combos but I am no where near a zone coach.

Very effective as you say- what were the results?
Yes, if we werent in those adjustments production def took a hit. More blockers at poa or less defender to block in the box helps a lot.
Our wr's play a very important part...in a perfect world we leave the cornera and 2 backside defenders free to make tackles. So ideally only play side corner and sometimes a safety would need to make the tackles. Again in a perfect world.
Prior to adjustments we had a lot of 4th downs now they were manageable but still a head ache. With the adjustments we had fewer 4th downs.
So ide say yes it was effective with some loose stats to back it. Mind you my team was very young 60% never played football and no one ever played a specialty position before so ide give us a B.

We only combo on good players and we had 3rbs. We had our feature back whoever would get about 60% of carries but yes he took a pounding.
Zone blocking as I've learned it is jello. It's made to adapt to the form of the defense. If you keep that in mind you'll have a better time with it. Get a hat on a hat, lock in and take him any where but backwards. But if he beats you stay on him and wash him somewhere, let the rb earn his soda and make reads

How did that all translate to:
Wins and Losses?
Points per game?
However beautiful the strategy, you should occasionally look at the results.Winston Churchill
