We attempt a "long onside kick" often, kick to the side, right over the front line, like a short iron shot on the golf course,. If it goes out of bounds, normally they just place the ball where it went out and play resumes.
I was reading the rulebook and it says
"6-5-8 b Put the ball in place at the inbounds spot 25 yards beyond the previous spot"

So the 35?

Just making sure

If you kicked from your own 40, yes.  It's one of the 3 options the other team has.  By your description the out-of-bounds spot is probably their best option, since that's probably nearer your goal line than the spot above, and why would they want to make you kick again if you like to attempt that long onside kick?
