Many have suggested that we include other sports in the forum. The new DumCoach is going to start with a site refresh and lots of additions, but still focused on youth football. Our way forward after that is to branch out, using the football site as a template for other youth sports sites.

I'm looking for suggestions from you as to where to place our energies first. We would like something that has a hungry crowd looking for a place that focuses on the youth aspect of that particular sport, but currently has no or few viable online avenues for coaches or parents.

Don't cross my path.

I have no idea.  I'm not a parent and I only coach football.

I'd second lacrosse. It is a sport that is rapidly growing in popularity all around the country. And I can speak from experience, my son being a goalie, that there are not many if any free resources out there like DCYS would be. Honestly in a lot of the higher income areas, lacrosse is the new football.

I coach football, basketball, and baseball. 8U and 6U.

I'd really like to see something for baseball out here. Quite frankly, no one is teaching the kids how to play the game the right way. There's also a huge shortage of people that know how to teach it. In my organization, it seems like coaches think that screaming "baseball ready" and berating them when they're down 16 runs (and then quitting when I told him to knock it off) is somehow helping to grow the game.

I'm down for contributing to any of these sports if I can help other coaches.

Honestly, should anyone be surprised?  I've been speaking English for more than 50 years, but I'd be insulting an English teacher if I told them I already knew how to teach it.  There's a reason that teachers have to get a college degree and spend time as a student teacher before becoming a full-fledged classroom teacher.  Even then, it may take them several years to learn the ins and outs of how to run a classroom.  And yet, "dads" who have no degree in teaching, no interest in earning one, can't even take the time to attend a Saturday afternoon clinic, are suddenly supposed to know how to teach fundamentals of the game just because they've seen it on TV, or played in in high school?  That's a reach.

Me being a  facilitator of the classroom has definitely helped me as a coach. Learning how to teach has taught me a few things
Not everyone learns at the same rate
There are at least 4 different kinds of learners which need to be taught different ways
Kids don't have lifes experiences to latch onto when being taught something new
Cell phones are the biggest distractors out there

I would love to see basketball added out of my own selfish wanting for another place to discuss the game.  There used to be a pretty good forum on proboards that got taken down a few years ago and since then the basketball coaching network really shifted to Twitter, IMO. So, while I would love to see us add a section for it to see how it goes and if it can gain some footing, I feel it necessary to also let you know that Twitter has become a pretty solid place for discussion.  With that said, I say we give it a whirl and see what happens.

Baseball might be a good one, along with soccer and volleyball.  The JO volleyball world seems like a huge landscape that I am just discovering and there are kids playing at a very young age.

AS one that has a daughter playing, you are right that there doesn't seem to be one focused on youth. Volleytalk and volleyballforums are the two main one out there, and the latter is awful.

Don't cross my path.

My daughter is playing for the first time this winter/spring so I haven't even thought to look yet.  I know nothing about volleyball and she is playing for a guy that seems to really know what he's doing, so I haven't felt the need to go digging yet (was that a volleyball pun?).

We can go back and forth and lobby this to death. I say we spike this now and kill it

So I think that eventually the idea would be too get as many sports as manageable if we are going to go that route. However, you would need a forum moderator for every board, which in and of itself will be a task. We all know how much time being an admin for something like this can take, on top of the social media concerns with having that many groups under one entity. Obviously these are not primary concerns at the moment as a solid football foundation needs to be laid well before we take on more work.

IMHO, this should be tabled while we really fine tune and hone in on the new page, blog, media creation, social media, etc. Once all of that is running smooth, the addition of another sport should flow pretty easily. And I know the idea here is just simple brainstorming, however, I just felt the need to play devils advocate.

Yours Truly,

Not a forum, but great resource is anything from John Kessel (USA Volleyball).  Just his experience on becoming a great coach/teacher is applicable to any sport.

Listening to him now on the podcast The Talent Equation.  Good stuff
