Just wondering how people like to open a game (other than kickoff).

I know it may change by opponent and week, I'm just asking what you standard is.

We are a dw /sw team for the most part. We usually run power.

Play action would be my choice. Everyone expects a run the first play of the game.

Whatever my play #1 is, that's what I go with 95% of the time.

I mean if that's my goto play, the one I will call on 1th and 10, 2nd and 7, 3rd and 8, 4th and 5, why not call it as my first play?

There is part of me that wants to see how well it will do. Because if that play doesn't work, we're in trouble.
There's also a part of me that wants to say, "yea, you scouted us, you know it's coming, now let's see if you can stop it".
And then, finally, there's a part of me that thinks that if this is my play #1, if that's the play we practiced the most, the one that we have the most confidence in, why would I even hesitate to call it?

I have been known to call reverse as the first play of the second half (or a bomb pass), and that's a time where I will be ready to gamble more, especially if we are ahead (I like to hit fast in that situation, and put doubt in the mind of the other team as fast as I can after they had their adjustments and pep talk at the half).

But first play of the game, I am VERY conservative. I want positive yardage to build on, and if my #1 play can't do that for us, we are in for a looooong game.

I normally run our base power play.  But I have been known to throw or run crack sweep on the first play, as well - both as tendency-breakers and ways to set up power.

Power or wedge.

But I'm a DW guy, so that is pretty much a given.

Another coach and I were having this discussion just today about what to look for when scouting.

Look at the first 3 plays of the game and you will "usually" find
the play they want to establish
The play that they will go to on a third and short or fourth and short
And the play that they will use when its 3rd and long

You can almost set a watch by it

2 Things my offense will always have is a Wing and a Wedge

Indeed. Which is another reason to use the broadly acclaimed "Don't Check With Me" system 😉
(or basically, running on predetermined series that you switch only when you want to call a particular play).

But even with that, my first series WILL start with my #1 play 8)

Is that what we're calling it now? LOL! It does have a nice ring to it!

Coach, this is a running gag I have with Mahonz.

I keep trying to find a better name for it, if only out of respect for his "Check with me" system, but I'll be dammed if I can remember any of the other names I came up with.

This one sticks (and probably stinks too).
I would be very obliged if you (or anybody else) could come up with something else that my feeble mind could remember 🙂

Yea, I was thinking along the lines of "move along, nothing to see here" too.
This thing needs its own thread  ::)
