Coaches,
What goes into your decision to receive the kickoff or defer when you win the coin toss?

I always defer and trust my Defense to give our offense a shorter field. We don't kick we get the ball at the 20 to start. We play on a 80 yard field.

We always defer....although I am rethinking it and would love to see what people think.

Defer. I feel it allows me the ability to dictate the 2nd half. Probably mostly in my head.....but we all have our quirks.

We always take the ball. Here my reasons although it could be different based on your own philoshophy.

1- We are a spread team and very little scouting in our area since we all play at different locations. So we almost always have the element of suprise and score quickly. Even if we don't have the element of suprise people can't duplicaate what we do in a youth practice so we have atleast two drives until the other team starts to make some adjustments.

2- Since we onside kick every time I consider the first quarter a blitzkreig. We are trying to put the whole game away early.

3- If it is still a close game to start the second half then we will onside it with a 50/50 chance of starting both halves on offense.

We always defer and then on side kick.

So it turns out about 1:3 we take a possession away from them. Either way I don't mind starting on Defense.

What is beautiful, lives forever.

its amazing how little special teams are talked about but yet almost almost daily on this sight, one begins to understand how important they really are, and the attention they really deserve.

Depends on our scouting report

Generally, we defer and kick it deep. Defense is the strength of our team. Our offense is most likely taking possession at the 30 yard line range, give or take.

This has been our practice, but we are thinking of going with an on-side kick this year.

I will definitely defer, I once won the toss and deferred. The other coach elected to kick.. 😮  He told me after the game he blew that one.

The sun.  Depending on how late it is in the season and in the day, the sun can go from a small factor in the 1st half to a big one in the 2nd.

One more very important thing goes into our decision: our rules.  We play by halves and not quarters.  Actually the officials tell us when the 1st & 3rd Q end, but we don't change ends of the field.  If the other team passes a lot, I want their receivers looking into the sun in the 2nd half, and I don't care if we have to kick off both halves to get that.

We want the ball. If you score first, it can hurt the other team mentally.

That's the same reason I want the Defense on the field first. Send an early message they are in for a long day. Maybe even force an early turnover. Still score first. If we have a bad defense, I can guarantee the offense will be pretty lackluster too.
