Not to be a geek again, but "Viking" wasn't a people - it was something they did.  A verb from Old Norse for raiding and raping and all that.

To go Viking was to hop in your boat and do your thing.

They came out of the Scandinavian countries to raid for wealth and ultimately to conquer because they coveted the good farm land of other countries like England and Northern France.

D

Then its good I dont own a boat.  😛

What is beautiful, lives forever.

Word on the street is that there was a noun meaning expedition, then a verb meaning raping and pillaging, then a noun meaning someone who goes on an expedition.

At minimum, they seem to be part of the long, awful tradition of nouns becoming verbs.

And I thought this was going to go into the Starvin Marvin Direction. Vikings would probably be good football players. Tough bunch. Don't know if the helmets would be legal.

A lot of their raiding was done because the Church enforced an embargo against non-Christians, or at least those non-Christians.  They couldn't get the goods they wanted by trade, so they stole them.  Christianizing was not attractive for a long time because the church supported the empires, and later feudalism, and the heathens of the north were mostly freemen.  They did, however, have the Islamic world as a common enemy.
