Was searching the internet for defensive schemes and found this great forum! A little background on me:
I'm 18, just recently graduated this past year. I played football and wrestled in high school, and loved every minute of it. I wanted to continue my football experiences and got into coaching. Started off coaching a youth flag football team (11 and under) for a nearby league with local high school players acting as coaches. My team did fairly well, with a lot of my players being in their first year of football. Lost in the first round of playoffs on a last second play following some questionable calls ::).
Got into Pop Warner coaching through my 13 year old brother, who plays for a local organization. I was involved my senior year, though only handling field duty like chains and concession stand. During preseason equipment handouts and testing, I was giving my brother and his friends a few tips when the commissioner approached me about an assistant spot and I gladly accepted! Went home and got USA Football certified in about 4 hours.
Nearly a month into the season, things are going well though our first game was lost, 27-0 shutout. We played a very good team that physically outmatched us and outcoached us. Our team is still confident though and happy to be playing God's favorite sport.
Being only a year removed from high school football, I feel I can connect better to the players and explain things in a way that an older coach wouldn't be able to. I also jump in drills and help encourage the kid's competitiveness. It also helps keep me in shape. With all that being said, happy to have found this forum.
Sorry if it was lengthy, thank you!
Uh oh. 😀
We played a very good team..and outcoached us.
This tells me there is some hope! 🙂

Well kind of this 🙂
I have a couple of Freshman players come out at help at practices and games...and they are invaluable. They can do things us old guys can't, so when we want something demoed they get to "show off". The kids think the older boys are rock stars, and will try and emulate what they saw.
Keep learning coach, welcome...
None of them suck, they just haven't found what the kid is good at yet.

Did he just call me old? Really? Now Im an "Old D*ck" ;D
I love the enthusiasm and passion! My own Son helped me with Coaching during his HS Career. I would caution you as I cautioned him. Coaching is a privaledge not a right. I see a lot of young, Former Players, joining the Coaching ranks and I like it. However, Coaching is about teaching not about showing off or reliving former glories in front of a captive audience. Some former players do not make good coaches because they assume that everyone has the abilities to do it as naturally as they do. Hence they forgot that it took most of them years to get where they are. Its no different than Coaching, it takes years to learn how to be a good Coach. Keep the enthusiasm and passion but, add a little humble pie to keep things in perspective!
Welcome!!

Not MPP... ONE TASK! Teach them! 🙂
My first paid coaching job was when I was in college. It was a very good experience as you think that you know the game, but coaching is not just knowledge of the game, but knowing how to teach others. I spent 9-10 years as an assistant to a very good HS coach (in basketball) and I kept my ears and eyes open about how to teach the game.
Once I had kids, I got "roped" into coaching again and have not stopped since. I added baseball and football to the coaching list and it was surprising how certain attributes make you successful in all of these sports. Preparation, discipline, gaining respect by giving it, paying attention to detail, etc. are all characteristics that translate across sports. The best part is that those same characteristics are what make people successful in business and just about everything else.
Keep with the coaching as you will be surprised at how it will help you feel young, even when you are old. 🙂
Congrats young man, hope all goes well for you and your team. Anything we can do to help. Just post and anything you ca do to contribute and help. Please do so as well.

Welcome to the Forum.
You do have a huge advantage here. You are everyone's Big Brother...not someones Dad or some old guy with bad breath that loves coaching like me.
My Son started helping me out when he was 20. I noticed this edge he had right away. Its very real so keep it real and coach em up!
Good luck.
What is beautiful, lives forever.
I did the same thing. I started when I was 19 years old 🙂 And I've coached 6 of the last 7 seasons. It can be frustrating at times. I think the best thing you can do is to have a great attitude. Have fun and keep the atmosphere intense.
Thanks everyone! I didn't know how that line would go over, my apologies if anyone thought I was offensive.
I'm happy to be coaching because I love sharing this sport and bonding with the fine young men on the team. I look forward to every practice and am happy to be out there ever day.
If you guys could check out my new thread I'd appreciate it as its been stressing me for a while http://www.dumcoach.com/parents-players/dealing-with-a-player-quitting/
Thank you everyone for the kind words and the warm welcome!
"fine young kids, learning to become young men"...
You are the young man on the team. 🙂

You may be. OTOH, sometimes grandparents are more in tune with the kids than parents are. But I'm glad you're enthusiastic about keeping that cx, rather than wanting to sever it. After all, that's how football kept going in its early days, with those recently retired from play coaching & officiating those who were still playing. Imagine all the games that must've passed from the scene as the children who invented them became adults.
