Hello all.  I found this board today at work (because what else would I be doing at work other than looking for more coaching insight) and the board seemed to be a pretty tight-knit group so I figured I would join.

I have been coaching for a few years now at various levels from HS to doing youth.  I have recently moved due to work and will be coaching this fall for a youth team in the DMV area.  I look forward to learning and hopefully teaching from the coaches on this board.

Welcome coach. Sorry if I'm being dense here but where is the DMV area?

I thought it was the Department of Motor Vehicles.  Good thing you asked.

Nice.

Yes, it's the DC area, specifically Northern VA for me though.

Why they call it that actually has to do with the Dept of Motor Vehicles.

DC/Baltimore has some great youth football. They had some awesome Pop Warner teams which all moved over to AYF (because they didn't like the rules supposedly) and are doing well there.

That is VERY true

Very underrated area for youth and High School football

Ive done over 20 clinics in that area- all were really well attended- right at the very top in the US
Extremely strong area for coaches that want to get better- very high participation in clinics

Had over 300 per session in Baltimore
Will be speaking at the DC Nike Coach of the Year Clinic there in 2018

I think because Maryland and Virginia have pretty much stunk at football for the last 30 plus years people think this area isnt a good football area
It is- most of the better players leave to play elsewhere

Youth participation rates are very good
Lots of great coaches in this area

The lines for drills would take forever.

You mean in college? Yeah. Josh Sweat was the #1 kid in the nation a few years back and he headed to FSU. They have some good hs ball. It was amazing before all those youth team in PW went to AYF how many match ups were Miami vs. Baltimore/DC in the NC finals.

Yeah, I wasn't a big fan of the AYF organization when I got to the area so I got involved with a county specific league.  There was just no excitement to get more coaches in the league and that just didn't make sense to me.

Lots of talent in the area for sure.  The problem with having lots of talent and no longer PW though is that there are WAY too many different leagues and institutions at the youth level to sufficiently get good competition like you do at the PW level.  But as long as the kids are involved with football at the youth level, that's all that really matters.

In conversations with other coaches from that area, many people were not happy with White Oak and some others and how they built their teams. I don't know how much of it was true and how much was sour grapes. I do know Watkins was in some trouble with PW for sure. When a parent goes on TV and talks about practicing since January, try outs and cuts in PW you get peoples attention. What I always liked with PW was the level playing field. Everybody is supposed to play by the same rules as far as team building. Not sure how much that is taken to heart with some of the teams you see at nationals every year. Certainly is a problem all over and not just up by you. I guarantee Miami does some shady stuff as well. In fact, I know they do.

Oh absolutely.  It's sad to see that people take youth sports to such a crazy level.  Don't get me wrong, I love winning, but youth football doesn't need to be ran like a college program.
The coaches that have to resort to that, are not confident enough in their own abilities at that point.
