3 of my buddies in their 50s lost their jobs in last 6 months
ALL VERY successful in their niches
None got jobs in their professions
2 are driving trucks and one is selling cars
All guys who were making 75K plus in Nebraska

It is the way of our economy and really capitalism (not that I don't like capitalism). Business's are in the business of making money. They can pay a 25 yo a whole lot less with often a much less generous benefit package then they can a 50 yo.

We do here as well
Our unemployment rate is lower than yours
But they are college grads with track records
They shouldn’t be back doing blue collar

When I say construction industry I mean clipboard & calculator. Not blue collar. I wouldn’t expect 50+ suits to move to CA & start framing houses.  😉

Those construction jobs are short term. Believe me, I have been in those supervisor jobs, they rarely last. Construction is a fickle industry. I got beat up by it for years. Won't get in it again on the private side.

They’re pretty stable in the greater bay area if you’re good & the banks aren’t handing out fraudulent loans.

I’m in kind of a weird place right now. I’d probably be working if I was willing to take a healthy pay cut, which would still be a salary that 10 years ago I wasn’t sure I’d ever get to. Do I settle, or hold out for what I probably should get? 

I kind of settled 3 years ago which is one reason I’m out of work now. Mistake then was I should have kept myself out there a bit and been willing to move on. I am typically pretty loyal to the company I work for and don’t take job calls unless I’m actively looking. In this case that hurt me, it just wasn’t the right job, and I should have kept my eyes open.

I got to a point in my life where chasing money got old. The almighty dollar was not making me happy because what I was giving up was not worth it. The recession hit and my well paying construction superintendent job disappeared. A few years of the recession (Floriduh was particularly hit hard) and I made a decision to take less money for security and great benefits. One of the absolute best decisions of my life. With constriction booming here I see the bubble starting to inflate. Guys have tried to pull me back into the private side. No thanks. I'm happier now than I have been in years.

Most companies do take the employee youth route at a great loss. Short term it makes sense. My father is a construction Super for the same company for 45 years. He is about to retire and the company begged him for 5 more years. They raised his salary by 20% and increased his benefits to 8 weeks PTO and 4 Weeks Sick. Now my dad is very good at what he does and saves the company and the clients millions of dollars because of his vision managing a build ( went to school to be an architect - finished and engineer -grew up a carpenter). They know once he leaves it will take 2-3 people to fill his shoes and they will not be able to do it as well. They have even offered to higher him part time and give him full benefits after his retirement.

nothing replaces effort. nothing replaces the mind. One with out the other is a waste of time.

I agree. Eventually though that older employee will need to be replaced. Many companies will do it earlier rather than later. It also depends on the job. I was a super for a company doing middle income residential. Dime a dozen. Did it for a company building schools and other complex facilities. Much harder to find those guys.

John, in the case of my interview yesterday, I want the job.  But if I don't get it, that's on them.  I was able to interview for it and that's enough for me.  I stated my case with them.  If they'd rather have someone else, then it's their loss.  (Or gain, if they choose a better candidate.)  Regardless, I just want the opportunity to interview.

That's how I started looking at things after years of rejections and interview fails while I searched to go from public to corporate accounting.  I must have recorded double digit strikeouts over the years.  Eventually I started noticing that positions I had interviewed for and was passed over for were coming back up on the job market a few months after they "opted to go with someone with more experience".  I did lack experience, but I had a fire inside me to make this career change that I didn't think other applicants might have.  I was underpaid and overworked (aren't we all?) in a toxic and dwindling firm and we had basically zero insurance for a few years.

Then two summers ago I end up getting three nearly simultaneous job offers all at the same time.  There was a great option available if I just wanted status and title and to feel like a big shot but stay in the same industry.  But I ended up taking a slight pay cut in exchange for great hours, benefits and corporate structure.  Two years later I couldn't be happier.  I have a great work-family balance, my salary was bumped up to where I wanted it to be because of my performance.  And this is only 3 years after I was feeling like it might never happen and I'd be stuck in a dead end job forever.

You never know when that opportunity will present itself.  You just have to keep grinding.  (sounds like something we tell our players a lot!)
