FWIW:

I'm told some of their fans were upset that once we got the lead in the 2nd half, we'd break huddle go to the Line and stand there until the play clock was down to 8 seconds, then we'd get set, usually snapping the ball at 3-4 seconds left.   Apparently that is cheating, who knew....

The overload formation I mentioned; if anyone is interested....

Our base formation is  Wing T 100 formation with the X flexed as in the DC wing T  [Q is under center]

                           X     0  0  C  0   0   Y

                                           Q                W

                                 H        T

The adjustments to our Overloaded formation are simple:

                                  0  0  C  0   0  Y      X

                                          Q             W

                                           T      H

Generally, this moves the DE out wider, increasing the space between the DT and DE, the W & X are to form a wall on the inside LB's.    H leads block, PSG kicks / logs depending whether we're running inside or outside.   Our W is improving as a blocker, and our X is ittsy-bittsy, we mostly hope a LB will trip over him.   If they can wall off the inside pursuit we'll take that, even tho we coach 'em to drive the LBs back, usually just delaying the LB a step or two will be sufficient.

Game 9

Did someone mention kids coming in unfocused before a game?   Yep, that was us tonight.  Kids were dinking around, not paying attention, just acting silly before and during warm-ups.   We played one of the weaker teams in the league and our kids must have been reading their press clippings.  We had talked about how this team had improved over the season, this was their chance to really make some noise if they beat us.

Well, kudos to the other team’s kids.   They are not very well coached, but they were extremely motivated against us, and played over their heads.

We took the opening kick off on a nice series of plays, taking just under 5 minutes off the clock (10 minute quarters).  Scored, converted; up 8-0.   We stuffed them on their first possession, then moved the ball well again, before fumbling it away inside their 20.

They got a couple 1st downs before our MLB stripped their RB of the ball.  Again, we had some nice gains, then a holding call, a couple more nice gains, then another fumble, we lost some yardage but recovered, then on the next play went out of bounds a yard shy of the 1st.  Their ball.

Pretty much wash, rinse and repeat for the rest of the half and the 3rd Q.   We’d move the ball, our belly plays were killers, but we’d manage to stop ourselves shy of the goalline, once inside the 10, another time around the 15.   Most of the game was played between their 45 and 20 yard line.  They only got past the 50 once, maybe to our 45 give or take a yard.

Mid-4th  quarter, our kids seem to find themselves, and on a series of Bellies and Buck-short, we drove into the end zone.   They got the ball with just under 2 min. in the game.  We got the ball back and ran out the last few seconds.  14-0 win.

That team has some talent, and some speed, they kept running down our fast kids before we could break anything major.  They just don’t coach their Oline well.  Their offense is a grab-bag of miscellaneous plays and formations.   They could be a lot better than they are, with better coaching.

I’ve made no secret that much of our success is due to inadequate coaching by our league competition.  I generally look at our non-league record as more an indicator of our coaching.   This season, we’re 5-0 in league, 3-1 out of league.   Overall 8-1 on the season.

We have one more reg. season league game, against a solid team, then the play-offs.

Game 10; 34-6 win, ending regular season at 9-1.

We played a solid team, unlike last week, though, our kids were pretty focused and played with high energy.  Very proud of the kids tonight.

We had 1st possession, scored a 62 yd TD on the 1st play – a Belly to the quickside.  Add 2 pts on the conversion.  8-0 us.

Our onside failed to cover 10 yds.   They put together a nice drive, mostly QB sweeps, we had a hard time getting a hold of him.   Eventually scored, attempted conversion failed.  8-6 us.

They kicked off to us, deep, and we returned it for TD.  Missed the kick, 14 – 6 us.  This was a 1st for me, we’ve scored twice and I’ve only called one play.

After that it was our game all the way. We had a lot of 5 - 7 yd gains through the game, our blocking was very aggressive - sometimes too much so, getting flagged twice, the RB was past our blocker, the defender turned and we didn't disengage.  The refs didn't see it the way I did, I argued the defender made it illegal by turning his back...  still, best blocking of the season.  We stole another possession by recovering the onside, and added another TD on Belly strong, and converted for 2 pts.

They picked up a couple 1st downs, but didn’t threaten, the score stood at half with a 22-6 lead.   They came in determined to stop our Buckshort, and mostly did, but that opened up our Belly game, which was ferocious.

We on-sided to open the 2nd half, and recovered, stealing another possession.  Unfortunately we got the penalty bug, we managed a couple 1st downs, but turned it over on downs.  Did burn quite a bit of clock though.

2nd half our DE’s took over, both were hustling and controlling the edges, turning their QB sweeps into losses.   Before the game was over we recovered 2 fumbles and added an INT.  We connected on a pass for a TD, and hit the Belly strong for another score, once we hit 34, we let some of the Oline run the ball, and ran out the clock.

Next weekend is 1st round of the playoffs. We come in as 1st seed and play the 4th seed.

Game 11; 1st round of play-offs,   20 – 0 win. We’re now 10-1 on the season.

FWIW; We find ourselves in the league championship again, for the 7th time in 8 yrs, we’ll be playing for our 5th championship in 6 yrs.

We took the opening drive 48 yds in 5 plays, scored on a Belly strong side, added 1 on the PAT;  7 – 0 us.

The onside kick was not recovered, they used a ton of time going mostly no where, penalties galore.  It was evident early they wanted to eat clock, lots of middle runs with their big back (we have no weight limit) right behind their massive interior linemen.  This was their offense for the whole game, they barely tested the perimeter and passed little.  We got the ball back on downs.  3 plays, scored on a buckshort from about the 5.    Missed the PAT.  13-0 us.

Not much to say from here.  Another time consuming drive by them, that pretty much ended where it started.  I think they got two 1st downs, but between penalties, fumbles and sacks, we drove them almost all the way back.  We put together a 4 play drive and again scored on buckshort from around the 3.   Made the PAT.

We added a pick 6 which was called back for blocking in the back.  Hit a couple short passes, but were denied near the goaline when time expired.  20 – 0 halftime.

We kicked off, they continued to grind the clock away, doing just enough to get 1st downs on 4 plays.  We got the stop around our 30.  Our WB got free on a Bucksweep, clear field ahead, no one near him got inside the 15 and the ball flew out of his hands.  They recovered.  They put together a good, long drive, used up the rest of the 3rd quarter and most of the 4th, got to our 10, when our MLB stripped their kid of the ball.  We ran out the clock.

Our OLine played well last week and even better this week.  Consistently opening gaping holes.  Very proud of our Line.  We also got 2 legit tackles from our autistic kid.  Very proud of him, too.

Next week we play for the league title.  The 3rd seed knocked off the 2nd seed.  They went back to the Beast offense, which they put on the shelf earlier this season, and ground out a nice 24 – 22 win.

League Championship Game

We received the opening kick-off, they on-sided, we got the ball just our side of the 50.  Ran Buckshort – one play drive for TD.  Missed the kick  - 6-0 Us.

We on-side, don’t get the ball.  They came out in the Beast, managed a 1st down, before we took over on downs.  Ran Belly to Quickside – I don’t know what they were trying to do Defensively, but they lined up perfectly for us to pick up ~18 yds.  Since they were giving us the play, we ran it again, and scored.  Converted for 2 pts. 14 – 0 Us.

Again we shut down their beast offense, and we took the ball on a 5 play drive, for nearly 60 yds. Scored from the 2 with a wedge up the middle.  Add a pt with the kick.  21 – 0 Us.

Another On-side try failed.  They gave up on the perimeter and off-tackle game and pounded us up the middle eking out 1st downs and eating up the clock.  We eventually took over on downs with time for 2 plays,  A Bucksweep w/ the WB broke big, and then he fumbled it away.  We turned it over near the 15 yd line.  They ran a play ending the half.  Half time we’re up 21 – 0.

2nd half was similar to last week.  We  got pounded up the middle for time consuming, just enough for 1st downs drive.  They scored using up 7 minutes of the 3rd Q [10 min Qs]  Converted for 2.   21 – 8 US

Their on-side pooch kick failed to go 10 yds.  Went about 20 ft almost straight up,  took a weird bounce back toward them, ended up about a ft from the kicking tee.   Never saw that before.   We took the ball for another big play drive, picking up chunks and getting nearly to the 5.  Again, scored with a wedge up the middle.  28 – 8 Us.

We again on-sided, and failed. They took another time consuming drive down to about the 15, we got the ball, and ran out the clock.  They seemed content to just keep our offense off the field.

Our Buckshort and Belly game was consistently good, our Bucksweeps not so much.  Wedge was very effective.   The last 3 games our Oline has opened big holes.

League Champs, 5th in the last 6 yrs.  Finish 11-1, scored 321 pts; gave up 82.

Great season, after last year’s nightmare season, I think I can sleep easy again.
