Won the Pop Warner Mid-South Region Championship today, 33-0.  The game ended at halftime, due to being in the Slaughter Rule in the 2nd Quarter and a bench-clearing incident on the final play of the 1st Half.  Things got pretty wooly…

This was the first time this season we’d had a team make us work.  They had size, were physical and put everyone in the box to stop Power.  We were stopped from scoring on our first possession, but scored 4 touchdowns and a Safety in the 2nd Quarter.  We converted all of our extra-point kicks, including one where we were hit with a 15-yard penalty.  Our opponent took the penalty on the XP instead of on the kick-off.  That made the XP a 34-yard kick.  Which we converted. lol

We put the game in Slaughter, which should have started the running clock but the refs didn’t signal for it.  Even though we were yelling at them to run it.  There was time for one more play in the 1st Half and things got chippy on that play.  If the refs had run the clock the way they should have, there wouldn’t have been time for these shenanigans and a 10-minute halftime would have allowed for things to cool down.

Anyhoos, the win puts us at 8-0 on the season, with 8 shut-outs, and 8 running clocks.  We’ve outscored our opponents, 339-0.  Next week, we travel to South Carolina to play the Lake Mary Rams.  The last time I coached against Lake Mary was in the 2019 Pop Warner National Championship game.  Winning next week would send us to Orlando, Florida.

I look forward to the day I can say a team made us work then report a 33-0 halftime score. Congrats coach.

Thanks Coach.

On our initial drive, we had to convert a couple of 4th Downs and yet still didn’t score.  At the end of the 1st Quarter, we were ahead only 8-0.  That hadn’t happened all year.  Gradually, as the quarter wore on, we became more diverse and it opened up more options for us.  As that happened, our opponent began to implode.  I really believe that our opponent thought they were going to win this game, and tried to establish a physicality right from the beginning.  No one had tried that against us this year.  But as the game went on, they started to slip, and as the game started to get away from them, they became more frustrated and more unsound.  They still didn’t have an offensive scheme (I’m not sure what it was), they still shot themselves in the foot (snapping the ball over their QB’s head pinning themselves deep and it led to a safety), they still did stupid stuff (choosing to move back our XP kick on a penalty, instead of applying it to our kick-off) and defensively…well, you can completely sell out to stop Power, but we’ve been working on that  for quite some time: instead of us swinging back with an even bigger hammer, why not just take the easy stuff that they’re giving us? When they presented us with other opportunities, we were prepared to take them.  (I’d go into more detail about what those things were, but we’re close to achieving something pretty special so I’ll wait until after the season to go more in-depth.) Yesterday was our most complete game, all season.  I was happy with how we played (which I haven’t been all year), and we looked good on offense, defense and special teams.

We had a good game plan, and our header has Coach W and myself watching for specific aspects of our Double Wing.  He did a great job of calling the game.  I was impressed with several things he did.  I’m taking notes…

Congrats DP!  My org played in eastern region final yesterday jpw level and won the region.  Both are going to Florida.  It's an exciting time.

Are you guys fundraising for the trip? Care to share any ideas/methods you have for accumulating the $$ needed for the trip?

Congrats again, love to pick your brain sometime on what you did this season.  All those running clocks has me thinking I could be a lot better with my guys.

I can explain it to you, I can't understand if for you.

—It surely is.  To actually play games that matter with consequences is a lot more interesting.

—Fundraising has begun.  However, I have no idea what they’re doing.  Header meets with parents and it goes from there.  I’m not an insider with this org; merely a hired gun. ?

—Anytime you want to talk some ball, let me know.  I gotta say, we’ve usually hit Slaughter 50% of the time in past seasons.  In 2005, only one team scored against us.  But this year is a different animal.  It’s been a perfect storm of hitting Slaughter because of offense/defense/special teams matched up against coaches who can’t get out of their own way.  Result?  Running clock.  This week?  Lake Mary is no joke.  They know how to play and they are well-coached.  The days of playing against Steven Simpleton are over…

—I hope we get to hang out with you in Florida.

Good luck Coach Zach and Coach Potter. I’m going to see a friends club on Saturday that is playing for a chance to head to Florida as well. It’s definitely an exciting opportunity, and I’m definitely a little jealous of all you guys that are still playing meaningful games.

Thank you Seth.  Yes, it's nice to still have something to play for, at this stage.  It certainly helps keep the focus in practice.  We'll see how this thing goes...

How did the game go DP?

We took the L, 34-14.  They played very well and we did not.  Their Single Wing was excellent, running what looked to be only 5 plays, Power, Sweep, Counter, Wedge, and QB Spin.  They were physical, crisp, ran and blocked very hard and looked more like a high school Single Wing that was as much interested in beating us up, as it was in execution.  They scored on their first possession, but it was their only possession of the quarter, they took so much time off the clock.  We got off a few big plays, but poor snaps or penalties caught us out.  They're very good at kicking onside, but when they kicked off deep to us, we returned it for a touchdown.  Defensively, they were rarely out of position and they tackled well, with usually more than one body getting there.  We got behind and had to resort to throwing the ball (which is NOT what we do) because we couldn't get their offense off the field.

We had more talent and speed than they had, but their coaching was clearly superior to anything we had to offer.  We were without 2 starters and a 3rd starter sprained his ankle earlier in the week, but having all three healthy would not have made a difference.  They were a far better team than us (the score reflects that), but we would have simply had to play near mistake-free football to win.  And make no mistake, it was a winnable game.

It's interesting in that the Lake Mary team that beat us in the 2019 national championship game looked so similar to this even though they were a Spread team then.  I met their HC and OC after the game and talked about their Single Wing.  Their entire approach and game plan was very professional.  We didn't lose this game this week.  We lost it at the beginning of the season (and all through the season) as our practice methodologies were not very disciplined.  Coach W and myself come from the school that says "make practice harder than anything you've ever done before" so that when you meet the immovable object, you have the force and confidence to move it.

I appreciate the opportunity I had to coach with this org and certainly learned some things about the Murphy Double Wing.  I have no idea what next season will bring, or where.  We'll have to see...

Sorry for the rough finish, hopefully Zach has better news to add to this thread.

I watched a friends club running clock a team yesterday on their way to Florida for the Pop Warner championships. Not sure how their opponent made it this far, but my friends club has some real talent. I’m a little concerned that they may get out coached in this next round though

--It's okay, Seth.  I hate to lose, but I told their staff how much I admired how they beat us.
