What would you say are the requirements for the Lineman in the Zone Blocking Scheme? What would be the Pros and Cons in Teaching Zone Rather then Man Blocking?

Requirements same for each position if they ALL zone block. Positions can be interchangeable!
I have listed the following ATTACHMENT roughly 100 times or more on dumcoach!

If they are good enough they are big enough. Smaller lines THRIVE on zone blocking because each man is not "all alone"!

One thing I picked up on pretty quick is that you want 5 OLM starting at the same positions for the entire season since all 5 will work in common mini tandems a high percentage of the time during each game.
Zone blocking is trusting the man next too you so allow them to develop that trust.
What is beautiful, lives forever.

Do you think Zone is a Good scheme to teach to Kids with little or no experience. I will more then likely be coaching C-Level Kids. Anywhere from 9-11 or 10-12 - Our league goes by Age and Weight. In our league we have A Level (Kids that have been played before or are the most talented), B Level (Kids that have played but not as quite talented as the A Level Kids), and C Level (Kids with Little or no Experience and who need some developmental work). So they would be playing against other C Level Kids.
My theory is its never to soon to start. 🙂

YES since it works off DRIVE & REACH block principles. The first 3 blocks we always teach (with ANY age group) are: DRIVE/REACH/DOWN.

Coach Mountjoy, I remember in one of your posts once talking about OL placement depended a little on the fronts you would see. I didn't take it as a hard fast rule but something like if you see a lot of odd fronts one might want their better reach blockers at guard. I might be completely imagining that or have it completely screwed up.
In one of the Gibbs videos he said he liked longer guys at tackle and shorter guys at guards. He also talked about having a cutoff on how tall he wanted his OL.
Perhaps I am missing something on this post. We are talking Youth Football, I think.
Here are my requirements:
1) They are breathing
2) 2 Legs
3) 2 Arms
4) At least 1 Hand
5) They attend practice
Everything else is negotiable. As a Youth Coach you can't recruit, or simply hire a new player. Don't get caught up in non sense like well Johnny has a bigger wingspan then Jimmie, when Jimmie is knocking people on their butt. Don't coach potential, coach ability. Most youth teams have 25 players & half them barely meet the requirements I posted. So coach what you have & find the best fit.

Coach Davis
The difference between Zone blocking & Man blocking is all in the way you coach it. Any lineman who is any good can do either if they are coached well.
IMHO, where Zone blocking excels is in the fact that we don't worry about who we are blocking just how. The downside is it has to coached correctly by a coach who understands what it is you are trying to do. We introduced Zone on Thursday, the brand new players understood what we are doing in less then a 10 minute install. Now they can focus on technique.

So, you show them the who and what before you start teaching the how?
Vince
During install it's all at once. The technique takes practice, but to describe it takes an instant. What we do at the HS is a lot more complicated then what I did at youth, & it's still incredibly simple. We had several brand new O Linemen out there, there was a few minor questions, but they grasped it in 10 minutes. We reinforce everything daily, & work technique till they can do it in their sleep. Once you as the coach understand what you are doing & can coach it, it is simple.

Please anybody who coaches youth, read this again.

To be good you have to work hard. To be better, you have to work harder. To be great, you have to keep working when the good ones stop.
Thanks For the Replies. I have heard a few different answers regarding zone blocking. Some have said if you don't have athletic lineman or big slow lineman don't run or teach zone blocking. Some of have said it's too much for youth players to pick up. Just trying to find different opinions.
Another Question what would be you main reasons for teaching and running zone blocking or not teaching and running zone blocking?
